Seal centre
If you are on Texel, you want to see seals of course. Ecomare is always nearby. During feeding, the caregiver tells you about the peculiarities of the animals, their way of life and their natural environment.
Porpoises
Ecomare also has two porpoises. During the feeding of these intelligent and sympathetic animals, their health is monitored by checking in their mouths and turning them on their backs.
Feeding schedules:
10:30: porpoises
11:30: seals
13:30: porpoises
14:30: fish
15:30: seals
Ecomare nature museum
Discover what the island looked like in the Ice Age – glaciers left behind solid lumps of boulder clay, such as de Hoge Berg (High Moutain). The great sea aquarium and their inhabitants are also recommended. During the holidays there are often extra (children’s) activities.
Exhibition
Herring king exhibition
Since February 2013, there is a king at Ecomare! An extremely rare and beautiful, meter-long silver fish with a red crown on its head: the herring king. He receives his visitors in style, in a special room.
Herring kings are the longest bony fish that exist. Because they have such a remarkably long and flat shape, they are also called oarfish. They are deep sea fish and always swim in the dark. The North Sea is very shallow for them, so they are never seen here.
The herring king at Ecomare washed up dead onto Texel shores on May of 2009.
